SUNCUTS – Collective Heliophobic Dream
On Collective Heliophobic Dream, the trio SUNCUTS transforms the dual nature of the sun — life-giving yet destructive — into sound. As drummer Maxime Hänsenberger explains, the band name reflects both primordial energy and its darker implications, an idea mirrored in their freely improvised music: cathartic, aggressive, yet subtly luminous.
The trio unites Russian-born, Zurich-based saxophonist Anton Ponomarev, Brazilian bassist Felipe Zenicola, and Swiss drummer Maxime Hänsenberger — musicians moving fluidly between jazz, noise, and experimental scenes. Formed serendipitously, the group quickly captured their intense first collaboration in a five-track studio session.
Across the album, explosive saxophone eruptions, driving bass pulses, metallic percussion, and electronic textures dissolve genre boundaries. Moments of raw power give way to structural nuance, fragmentation, and reassembled collective force.
As Ponomarev describes it, each performance becomes a sonic ritual — primal yet precise, forceful yet deeply attentive to space and dynamics.
